Security: your questions
Vulnerabilities, hacks, monitoring: what you need to know before handing over your website.
Why do WordPress sites get hacked?
WordPress is the most widely used system in the world, so it is the main target of bots that constantly scan the web. Most hacks come from simple causes:
- plugins or a theme that are not updated and have a known vulnerability;
- weak or reused passwords, attacked by brute force;
- “cracked” themes or plugins that contain malicious code;
- hosting that is poorly configured or never monitored.
What are the most common vulnerabilities?
The most frequent ones on a WordPress site:
- plugin vulnerabilities that allow code injection or database access;
- scripts injected into pages (XSS) that redirect your visitors to dubious sites;
- hidden redirects added to server files, such as .htaccess;
- forgotten admin accounts, or accounts created by an attacker;
- hijacked upload files used to plant a backdoor.
Often the owner notices nothing: Google ends up showing a warning or removing the site from search results.
Why hand your website over to a specialist?
Updating a website takes two minutes. Knowing what to do when an update breaks your store, or when the site is hacked, is a different job. A specialist:
- backs up before every intervention and knows how to restore;
- knows the server, not just the WordPress dashboard;
- spots the signs of an attack before it costs you customers;
- saves you from losing sales, rankings or data.
How do I actually protect your website?
- WordPress, theme and plugin updates, checked after they are applied;
- full backup before every intervention;
- web application firewall and brute-force protection on the login page;
- Cloudflare protection and SSL certificate;
- admin accounts reviewed, two-factor authentication recommended;
- on the server: hardening, firewall, key-based SSH access and log analysis.
And never a cracked theme or plugin: official sources only.
How will I know what is happening on my website?
After each monthly intervention, you receive a report by email, in plain language:
- the updates applied;
- the backup made;
- the checks carried out on key pages and forms;
- any security alerts detected and what was done;
- my recommendations, if any.
What happens if there is a bug or a hack?
I let you know as soon as the problem is detected, then I work through it step by step:
- diagnosis, and taking the site offline safely if needed;
- restoring from a clean backup, or fixing the bug;
- after a hack: cleanup, closing the vulnerability and changing every access;
- an incident report: what happened, the cause, what was done and how to prevent it from happening again.
What are your security skills?
I’m a systems and network engineer with over 25 years of experience in IT. Server security is part of my daily work: Linux hardening, firewalls, log analysis, VPNs, backups and restoration. I hold the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate.
